It should play DivX if it says DivX on the front, most players that play DivX will play XVid too which is normally what you would download. Try Asda for a cheap one or check out the AVForums for more info.
Once you get fed up burning everything to CD then you can move on to a networked media player box, Media Centre PC, Xbox, etc. ;-)

Way over my head LOL. What is a networked media player and what does it do????
I want one for my father that plays most or all formats, dont know what I am really looking for though.,
They are awsome! and you can multi region it yourself quite easily. These sold a few months back for 45 quid - well worth it. The bigger brother with 5.1 speakers is also available but you may or may not need them.

I got one of these it came out the box multi-region. It also has a USB port so you can plug in a USB drive or as I do a very large external hard drive with a USB connector.

Sam, you could consider the Sumvision Lynx or Phoenix. I have the Lynx. The difference between the two is that the Phoenix has component output sockets and the Lynx does not. Not a problem for me as I use the HDMI output.
It is labelled both DIVX and MPEG4. With this player you do not need to burn files to CD or DVD as it has both SD card and USB stick front sockets.
Unfortunately I cannot advise on its DIVX performance as I have not been using it that way. I got it as it had SD and USB input and HDMI output, at a good price too.

The USB port makes it "must buy" saves hassle of burning disks and with pen drives so cheap (8gb for£18) you can watch about 10 movies from one pen drive or a whole 24 episode tv series with so much ease. Its almost as good as a media pc!

If you're not in too much of a rush get yourself signed up for the LIDL and ALDI newsletters, they have them on specials at about £25-£35 at various times.

It's basically a PC with the ability to record TV, it sits by your TV like a video. You can set it to record 2 programs at a time and it'll even play video from your main PC over a network.

No more burning cds or dvds and no more !coasters". So far it's played everything I've thrown at it. It will also stream from the pc depending on the version. I copy stuff across from the pc using the USB connection. It also acts as an external drive.
